PC Face Off

Last June 9, I said that it will be the last post about my old PC in my office table. I was wrong. Yesterday, my new office PC was delivered to me. And while I was copying my files from the old PC to the new PC, I can't help but take a picture of it and post it in this blog.

Old or New?
In my case, there are advantages and disadvantages of having a new office PC. Some advantages are: much faster than the old one and you get to use the latest PC technology. While some disadvantages are: some securities are not yet fixed to comply our network security and needs more time to copy files and install softwares. And right now, the disadvantages outweighs the advantages. I hope not for long.

Today, I'm still waiting for my enterprise account to be upgraded to 'Administrator' because I can't use some of the new softwares I installed in it. If this new PC has the same specifications as my old one, I would not give up my old PC.


Whatever it is, one thing is sure. I have a new and faster PC.

Happy Birthday Sir

Today, is the birthday of our boss Jotham (or Amo as some of my officemates call him). During lunch, he treat us in an eat-all-you can restaurant in downtown Davao.

We had a big lunch (or a monster lunch). Wheew. But its ok because tommorrow will be the third game of the Jotham's Cup. At least we can lose the pounds we gained today.

Jotham's Cup: The GISD Basketball Tournament Update

Last June 7, 2007, we had our first GISD basketball game. Last night was our second game.

The agreement
Race to two games. Whichever team wins twice first will win. And the loser will buy roasted chicken for dinner (again).

The Synopsis
Team 1 won the first game. But Team 2 came down hard with big blows and won the second and third game. But this morning, Joe of Team 1 argue that only the first game was the valid one for last night's game. Apparently it was their secret agreement with Macao of Team 2, my team, that the first game will be the deciding factor of last night's game. Team 2 was like HAAHHH?

The Result
Team 1 wins. Team 2 losses (because of that secret agreement).

The Conclusion
Back to zero next game (because of that secret agreement). Still no roasted chicken bought (not even a burnt feather). But we were happy we lose some pounds and no muscle pain today.(^_^)

Tips For Aspiring Programmers

I'm a computer science graduate. And because of that I'm a computer scientist, yes? Well, technically I am, but functionally not. I don't design computers. I design softwares - things that make a computer functional. I'm a full-time systems developer.

Being a computer science graduate doesn't automatically makes you a good systems developer, or a programmer as some call it. Some graduate of the said degree ends up in other fields such as teaching, bank clerks, sales agent and etc. I'm don't blame them or discriminate them of any sort.

To be a good software developer requires hardwork, determination, practice and enjoying what you do. If you are an aspiring programmer, here are my personal tips you could use:

1.Enjoy Programming. This is the most important. Before you take an IT degree, ask yourself: Do you enjoy programming? Do you like the idea of sitting all day in front of the computer? Do you enjoy analysing complex problems and come up with a good solution just by thinking? If you answer 'No' to any of this question, go get yourself another degree or profession.

2.Self-Study. If you're still a student, don't just rely on what your intructor teaches you. Read more and more books and teach yourself programming and other IT stuffs.

3.Communicate With Your Peers. Share your ideas and knowledge with other programmer. Sometimes you think your ideas are very good but when you hear others', you'll find that it's there ideas that are better. Sharing among your peers will give you more knowledge about your craft. Don't be shy to ask questions.

4.Practice, Practice and Practice. Truly, practice makes perfect. Constant practice in programming will enhance your programming skills. The more you practice, the more you become better in your field.

5. Upgrade Your Skills. Programming technologies today are very fast evolving. Ten years ago, desktop application are everywhere. Now, web and browser-based applications are more in-demand. And now mobile computing are fast evolving. Upgrade your skills by self-studying, participating in training and seminars.

Programming is a trial and error process. Don't be intimidated if others (or your classmates) are better than you. Follow my #4 tip (Practice, practice and practice). When writing a program and you hit a dead-end, set back, relax and go back in front of the PC.

What's more. This bloggers also spend countless of man hours to improve their rankings to be on top of the list. Their success is years in the making. So if you are an aspiring blogger, be patient and slowly build your traffic to the top.

Feedbacks About Our Wedding Reception AVP

Last June 1, I posted in this blog my wedding reception AVP (audio video presentation). I got nice feedbacks about it from my college classmates and friends. They said it was nicely done, others told me how romantic and proud I am about my marriage. And one of my classmate in college said; "I didn't know you have a serious side inside you". (^_^)

Well, she said it maybe because when I was in college, I always do things less seriously. I make fools about almost all the things arround, except my education of course.

Some also ask for pictures of our wedding. At first, I want to make another website that will host all of our pictures. But when I changed this blog to a new domain name, I changed my mind. Instead of making a new website, I'll post some of our wedding pictures in this blog.

Hopefully, when my internet connection at home gets connected this week, I'll be able to post some of our wedding pictures in this blog next week.

New Blog Address, New House Address

Last Saturday, this blog moved to a new address, and yesterday also, we finished moving to our new apartment. The same apartment building but different door number. Before, we were at door number 3, now we are at door number 4 of the YMCA apartment.

I have no internet connection at home since yesterday. I have to apply for a new one for our new house. My previous connection was Smart Bro. Now, I think I'll go for the PLDT-DSL because I have to pay another 1800.00 pesos just to have my existing connection transfered.

The beauty of PLDT-DSL is that it comes with the telephone line at the same price with the Smart Bro. Although I haven't tested the speed of PLDT-DSL, it looks promising because some of my co-workers are connected through it and so far I haven't heard of their complain about it. Likewise, one of my officemates told me that there is a promo at PLDT for a two-year free internet connection. Although, I still don't know how to avail for this promo.

Moved To A New Address

This blog has moved to a new address from life of a programmer to joelbadinas dot com.

From the day I made a commitment to update this blog regularly, I have been true to my word. And since I want to do it this for as long as I'm inpired to write, I bought my own domain for this blog. I thought buying a domain that bears my real name will strengthen that commitment also, at least for a year.

I bought my domain at 1 And 1. The 1&1 Instant Domain Package that I bought took almost 2 days before it became available and another 1 day for updating the CNAME so that I'll be able to use it as a replacement to my old address .

At 5.99 dollars for one year plus the free private domain registration, I think this is just right to my pocket.

If you are really serious of blogging for passion, I suggest you register you own domain.

And with this new domain name, I can now officially say that I am a true-blue blogger. (^_^)

Clutters In My Table

At last, Saturday again, time to slow down at work. Time for research and study of programming stuffs.

I have always been an orderly person. I don't like the table where I work is cluttered with things that I don't use. But during days like this, my table is cluttered with stuff. I think it's because of my mentality that the following day is Sunday and the janitor have more than a day to clean all my mess.

By the way, this is maybe the last time that I'll be posting a picture of my office table with that PC. My new PC has arrived last week and maybe next week, I'll have it on my table already. So I guess this is sort of a bye-bye to my old PC.

Self-Study Quest Update

It's about three weeks ago when I posted about my plan to study XML, Javascript and Ajax. As of today I'm in the chapter 5 of the XML course. It's a bit slow i know (the culprit is my blogs and other website). I'm studying XML at home and whenever I'm in front of my PC and opens my blogs and other websites I'm hooked to it in an instant. It's too late before I notices that its already almost midnight and I have to sleep for the next day's work.

At the office, I also read the JSP Web Development book that has been in my table since last year and right now I'm in chapter 4. Whew. I just hope I just can download the information in this books to my brain just like when I download a file from the internet to my PC. (^_^)

Blogging With Passion - A Blogger's Sercet Formula

My first website was a blog (I can't remember the title now). It was powered by blogger as with this blog. Back then, I was inspired to blog because I have known others making big bucks monthly just by blogging. Down the road, as I gained more experience in blogging, I have learned that monetizing your blog should be the second goal in your list. The first one should be your passion to write about something you are interested.

On my personal opinion, this is true. When I started this blog, my goal was to monetize it and not to right about my opinions and daily ramblings as a programmer. After a month that this blog was online, I stop posting. This blog went dead for almost six months. I almost delete it had it not bear my codename, kabalweg.

Until one day, I just had a sudden enthusiam (if it's what you call it) to update this blog regularly with the money just the second goal. Since then, I have been posting regularly about my daily ramblings and other stuffs that interest me. And since then, this blog went alive again. At times, I even post two to three times in a day about my daily activities and other stuffs.

For fellow bloggers, my penny-worth advise is: blog with passion on something you are interested in and for not money or at least make it just your second goal.

Jotham's Cup: The GISD Basketball Tournament

Last night me and my co-workers had a basketball game. We divided our department into two teams, Team A and Team B.

First Pictures Using My Sony DSC-S650 Camera

My New Sony DSC-S650 Digital Camera

Last Sunday, June 2, 2007, I bought my very first camera. My friends, Eman and Dacs, came with me to help me find the best value camera. Originally, I plan to buy a Canon branded one like Eman's but he said he saw a cheaper one while he was walking in the SM mall. So it was the one I bought, a Sony DSC S650 seven megapixel digital camera.

This camera has a standard three times zoom lens and has a built-in 24 MB of memory. It is easy to use and likely to appeal to anyone looking for a less expensive camera (like me) from one of the leading brands like Sony.

This camera easily fits into a pocket (but I won't put mine in my pocket), but is compact enough to be carried around without a problem.

The unit comes with a carrying case, a hand strap and is warranted for three years for services and parts at all Sony service centers nationwide.

At PHP10,999.00, payable through my credit card for 12 months without interest, I think this is the best value camera I've been looking for.

From now on, expect me to post here some pictures I've taken with my new Sony DSC-S650 camera. (^_^)

Now Unblocked by Blogger

As you have noticed, the post in this blog, from June 2, 2007, just appeared today. The reason was because this blog has been locked by Blogger robot last June 1, 2007.

Last night, I recieved an email from Blogger saying that they have reviewed this blog and cleared it for regular use.

I almost lost my patience waiting for the reply from Blogger because I update this blog everyday. I hope Blogger robots are more intillegent enough to know what are spam blogs and what are not.

My Agloco Accumulated Hours at Day One

It's been almost ten hours since I downloaded and installed the Agloco Viewbar and now I have almost five accumulated hours showing in my account.

It seems the viewbar is running smoothly right now. Last night there was no ads showing in it. But today as I started using it again, there are textlink ads.

The viewbar is self-updating so maybe in the next couple of days we will see more changes in it's displaying of ads and other features.

Finally, Agloco is LIVE

Tonight as I check my email, I was greeted by an email from the AGLOCO.com service telling me that Agloco Viewbar is finally available for download. I immediately login to my account and downloded the viewbar (it took a while before I was able to access the login because of the massive traffic at that time). I installed and run it (whew, I was excited). Now I'll have proof to my colleagues that Agloco is not fruad.

Agloco To Be Release This Tuesday

I visited Agloco's official website today hoping to read a new update about the Viewbar. And you know what, I didn't failed. Agloco will be release this Tuesday, June 5, 2007.

Well, my patience had bear its fruit. As I have made my point about Agloco's delay to deliver the Viewbar, software development is not that easy especially for complex system such as Agloco.

Here's a qoute from the official Agloco blog:

We have made a workaround regarding the ad server problem and we will finally be launching the Viewbar. Some, but not all, of our ad networks will be connected. These networks have enough ads on them, so we are comfortable releasing the software as we continue to work on the outstanding issues that remain with the other networks. All of the preliminary Viewbar functions are there, but with the ad problems we will not be initially launching with the personalized ad targeting. We will continue to develop this capability after we have launched and when it is available the new version of the software will be incorporated into your viewbar automatically.

My First JSP (JavaServer Pages) Codes

Saturdays for me is time for research and study. I turn my attention to one of the book in my office table and the book jsp web development
catches my attention and grab it. This book has been in my table since last year but I just use it as my pillow for my noon time nap. (^_^)

Actually I want to learn Java eversince but I'm having a hard time learning it. Maybe JSP will help ease my stigma of the Java since JSP uses the the Java technology.

After turning a few pages on chapter one, I installed Apache Tomcat (I already have Java installed in my System) and typed one of the sample codes in that chapter.

Locked By Blogger's Spam-Prevention Robots

This morning, I was showing a colleague how to add picture in Blogger profile by posting the picture, when I was met by a warning message from Blogger.

It said:

WARNING

This blog has been locked by Blogger's spam-prevention robots. You will not be able to publish your posts, but you will be able to save them as drafts.

Save your post as a draft or click here for more about what's going on and how to get your blog unlocked.

It turned out that this blog was visited by a robot (while I was sleeping) and tag it as a spam blog (of course it isn't).

I immediately contact Google about this so that a human (maybe one of their staff) will review this blog and eventually release the spam blog tag.

Report No More

At last, I finished the report that I have been doing since almost two weeks ago. I wasn't able to focus doing it because of my busy schedules. Meeting here and there, and I have to take two days off to accompany my wife to Manila.

Now I can focus on my next goal, to teach myself XML, Javascipt and Ajax. I have already started learning XML and I'm loving it. (^_^)

Life of a Programmer New Look

It's already 1:15 in the morning.

I just finished updating the template of this blog from the old template seen in the picture at the right.

I redesigned the old template to look like this new one so that I can optimize the space for the Google Adsense ads and other materials that I will be putting in the future. I plan to put other income generating materials at the spaces in the sidebars. Or maybe flickr photo or youtube movies and etc.

My First Adsense Check

Last December I recieved my first Adsense check. For me and for others out there, this is a big proof that there is really money in the internet. In fact, many blogger and webmaster are making a living out of the internet. Too bad that I discovered Adsense just last year through one of my officemates.

The check, which is 127.56 dollars in amount, is a product of my trial and error when I started blogging and designing websites since May 2006. Not really much compare to others who averages from hundreds to thousands of dollars in revenue every month.

If I hade discovered Adsense in college, I'd get more than this because I started designing website since college but stopped when I got a regular job.

Next month (June), I'm expecting again my second check.

This year, one my goals is to increase my revenue to 10 dollars per day. This days, I'm still averaging less than a dollar per day. It would require much work to reach my goal, but who knows I might get lucky this year. (^_^)

My New Somic SM-302 Headset

I'm excited to try my new Somic SM-302 headset. I bought this in Manila last Monday.

I have been looking for this kind of headset that fits right to my head. I have already a headset but it was big and bulky. I sometimes get a headache wearing it. And it was hot to the ear because the ear piece was big.

This Somic SM-302 fits right to me. At 345.00 pesos, this seems a good find. I hope I can continue my self studies in XML, Javascript and Ajax with this new headset. And also listen to some good music and watch movies.

And Back Again...

I went to Manila last Saturday to accompany my wife.

Manila. My day started very early, We woke up at 2:30 in the morning and arrived to the NAIA airport at around 4 o'clock for my wife's flight. At that early, there were already many passengers due to depart. Her flight was 6:40 so I waited until 6 hoping that she can join me at the cafeteria for a quick breakfast before her flight but after she check-in her luggages, her plane was in time for boarding. She then just called me.

I went to the Manila Domestic airport after that and slept for awhile at the bench while waiting for my flight, which is 9:25, for checking-in.

Davao. I arrived to Davao at past 11 in the morning today. After taking a quick shower, I had my lunch and a did a few house errands. Then, slept for more than 2 hours.

TGIS - Thank GOD It's Saturday

Thank GOD it's saturday. Saturdays are like slowdown days for me. During this days, work is not much as streesful as the normal weekdays and some regular employees, like me, in our company is only half day shift.

Normally, I allot this day for my research of IT stuffs and other programming languages and methodologies. But today, we had our monthly departmental meeting which is mostly about updates of our projects and accomplishment for the past month.

Mini Management Conference (Re)Re-echo

We had an engineering mini ManCon (Management Conference) this morning. This was the second time that the said activity was held, thus the title (re)re-echo, to cater other employees who wasn't able to attend the first mini mancon, held last April 2007.

The event features the presentation of each department their plans for the year 2007. For our department, I was task to operate the PC for the Powerpoint presentation. Maybe next year I'll be the presentor for our department (I hope not (^_^)) .

For me, the highlight of the said event was the food (as all other company events I attended). I had a real heavy lunch. Until now I feel I'm still full.

My Agloco Network Update

Today I checked my AGLOCO account to find out how many members is in my network. Well, nothing much has changed. I'm still far from the 1500th mark. I'm not surprised though, I don't recruit members aggressively, at least this days that the Viewbar is not yet released because others want proof before they sign-up.

AGLOCO made an statement that they will release Viewbar on April but they didn't keep it. May came and the Viewbar is still in beta, although they allow John Chow to test it, still, members aren't contented.

Personally, I have high hopes in AGLOCO. I know that the Viewbar will be available in due time. As a programmer myself, I understand the delay. Developing software don't sound easy as it is. In fact, it is harder when you're designing complex systems such as the AGLOCO system. I have encountered users is our company that is very demanding when they want something to be programmed. They think that sitting there in front of the PC writing source codes is like sitting in a park with a book (THINK AGAIN).

In a developer's point of view, this PC don't meet the standard for developers like me. But this PC serves its purpose. I have designed, maintained and currently writing computer softwares using this.

I hope this June a new and faster PC for me will arrive. But for the meantime, I'm making the best of what I have (^_^).

Report, Report and Report

For the first time since I came back to work from my one month vacation, I was able to spent the whole day today almost entirely in front my PC.

I'm finished the format #1 of the five reports that I have to finished by the 24th. I plan to finish this by then so that I can focus on other task or research and study new programming techniques and methods.

XML, Javascript and Ajax are my priorities this time. I hope I can teach myself this languages before the end of the year.

This morning while I'm dressing up for work, I noticed I'm having a hard time putting on my pants. I gained weight since my one month vacation. So I decided to start my gym workout again this afternoon after office.

Meeting, Meeting and Meeting...

Almost my whole Monday at work was spent on a meeting (nothing much changed since last week). I was lucky that I was able to spent some time with my task to create a report, that is due on May 24, (whew) for my system, PowerOne Constellation.

Me and my wife spent the the whole weekend in Manila to celebrate the birthday of her mother. We got back just this morning enough for me to get ready for my work. I only slept two hours last night. And so I was sleepy like hell while we were conducting meeting and coding the report (^_^).

I hope tomorrow I can focus to code my report so that I will be able to beat my deadline. I just hope so. (^_^)

XML, Javascript and Ajax - Still out of Reach for Me

As a programmer, It has been my dream to be a master of web programming. I have self taught myself PHP, HTML and CSS programming languages - which is one of the essential programming language skills a web programming should have.

Although I have created website using those languages, I still feel that I need to learn other technologies and languages such as XML, Javascript and Ajax.

These three languages - XML, Javascript and Ajax - are one of the most needed skill I feel I need to learn. Too bad I have materials needed to learn those technologies but I don't have time to read it (or I just don't find time (^_^)).

And so starting today, I will find time to learn those languages. First I will learn XML, then Javascript, and then Ajax. And use it in my daily work as a programmer. Mark my word.

Google Cash Strikes Back

I recieved an invitation from my email to download Google Cash. It's an ebook which teaches how someone can be profitable using Google.

Google Cash was first introduced in 2003 and in about a year, many internet marketers (newbies and experts) profited from it. Even until these days, many internet marketers still does though the competition is hard.

After about four years, Google Cash is reborn. This time promising easier method to money making in the internet through Google.

Election Paraphernalias Removal Operation

This morning, all DLPC regular employees was tasked to remove the election paraphernalias in the two major streets of Davao. The activity started at 6 in the morning and would last until 10:30.

I had fun removing the the pieces of craps that the candidates posted in every structures they can get into. It was only very tiring. One hour in the operation and I feel I need to go home and sleep the whole day. This made me think, what if candidates will use the internet to campaign for elections. It would be less messy.

There were press poeple who covered the event. I bet they were there just to get a scope of the event. Commotion followed wherever they go because DLPC employees would pose with them in front of the camera. And of course, I'm one of them. (^_^)

I just hope other companies will follow what DLPC started. And also candidates who won in the latest election should do thier part in removing posters too. They posted it, they remove it.

Four Posts in Less Than Two Days

Already 10:14 PM and I'm still awake busy editing the template of this blog and adding some Adsense codes and also doing email checks and checking my other websites (and composing this post).

I browsed this blog earlier and I was surprised that I have posted 4 posts in just less than two days. Before, days, even weeks or months, would go by before I get the inspiration and enthusiasm to write a anything in this blog. I think I'm finally learning the formula of blogging. (^_^)

I ate Durian (Davao's signature fruit) earlier with my wife. She preferred Pomelo 'cause she can't stand the smell of Durian, which is one of the tastiest fruit I ever tasted (others thinks so too). (^_^)

Going-home Time. Not Much Done.

Past 5pm, another day has passed. Not much done in terms of my programming projects because we had a meeting almost the whole day.

I'm making a report for my system, PowerOne Constellation, that is deployed in VECO (Visayan Electric Company). This task in scheduled to be done in just 1 week and I spent the first 2 days almost entirely in a meeting. Whew, how can I finish this task in this kind of schedule. (^_^)

Tomorrow, all DLPC employees are required to attend the clean-up drive of all election materials in a road near the DLPC Ponciano office. Said task will start at 6:00 AM.

Pacman After Election

This picture has been going around our company email. It shows a funny picture of boxing sensation Manny "Pacman" Pacqiuao and Freddie Roach, after he loose, with a large margin, to incumbent congresswoman Atty. Darlene Antonino-Custodio in the recent Philippines National Election.

Pacman run for the congress versus the incumbent Darlene Antonino-Custodio despite strong disapproval from his fans in the Philippines.

Despite the very convincing win of Cong. Custodio against him, Pacman claims that he was cheated in the said election because, according to him, there were no watermarks in the election returns which prove it's authenticity. Though, that issue is not yet been cleared as of this writting.

Let's just see in the next couple of days if Pacman's picture changes. (^_^)

Morning Glory

It's 7:03 in the morning (Philippines time). Just finished breakfast with my wife, over fried fish, eggs and rice (yummy). Instead of taking a bath to get ready for my work, I can't help to check my emails and my websites statistics - this is one of the reasons why I'm sometimes late for work (^_^).

Yesterday I thought of regularly updating this blog which will features my life as a programmer and anything about my view of things around me.

And so this is my first post in an effort to fulfill that quest (^_^). I think updating this blog will be just for fun and just sort of a pass time for me to unwind from the busy schedule of my work.

Have to go. I'm going to be late.
